I'm also learning as I go. APK Editor is great for quick image replacement in the simple edit mode. For smali text edit I use the Common Edit mode and select decode all files, go to files then click on smali. It has the option to perfom search on the smali text, quickly takes you to each instance, where you can make your changes, then you can save it.

The issue so far that I have is the play protect on device where modified app is installed is saying the app is harmful. App works fine but that message continues to appear.

ahh play protect !!!!!!
I had this problem yesterday where it was switched on , all my devices was doing it but there is a fix and its not to do with the app you edit
its a setting in the google play store

Verify your device certification status

  1. Open the Google Play Store app
    Google Play
    .
  2. At the top right, tap the profile icon.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Under 'About', check if your device is Play Protect certified.

How to turn Google Play Protect on or off

Important: Google Play Protect is on by default, but you can turn it off. For security, we recommend that you always keep Google Play Protect on.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app
    Google Play
    .
  2. At the top right, tap the profile icon.
  3. Tap Play Protect
    and then
    Settings.
  4. Turn Scan apps with Play Protect on or off.

Send unknown apps to Google

If you install apps from unknown sources outside of the Google Play Store, Google Play Protect may ask you to send unknown apps to Google. When you turn on the 'Improve harmful app detection' setting, you allow Google Play Protect to automatically send unknown apps to Google.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Store app
    Google Play
    .
  2. At the top right, tap the profile icon.
  3. Tap Play Protect
    and then
    settings
    Settings
    .
  4. Turn Improve harmful app detection on or off.

hello friends, I solved this playprotect problem, just signing the apk again, I used the apk signer, and it solved my problems.

Note: I didn't need to disable play protect no.

My opinion I try and use Easy APK tool and Android studio ( Takes some learning and dicking about to get it to work ) some apks just wont play nice with the easy tool, but I prefer it to messing ablout with emulators. MT Manager is the next best option as it tends to play well with other apps without breaking them. APK editor master/ultra/pro aare easy for image swaps, but once again I have these to break some apks...
My current process is to use apk editor ultra to extract the images to a folder, then I transfer to windows and do everything else with the windows tools. I have managed to apk easy tool to decompile and recompile most apps now and is my preferred way to go, but as I said involves alot of head scratching and swearing..
